About Annabel Greenhalgh

Annabel Greenhalgh lives and works on the Pembrokeshire coast of Wales. Working principally in pastel, Annabel Greenhalgh captures the mood of a piece through careful and accurate attention to the natural landscape whilst employing her emotional response to the places she loves.

Seascapes and coastal scenes are amongst Annabel Greenhalgh's favourite subjects as she spends as much time as possible surfing and swimming. The rolling hills and mountains of Scotland and Wales also figure largely in the collection, as well as those of Dartmoor.
Annabel Greenhalgh has been described as the foremost British pastel landscape artist.

History of Pastels

Pastels were first used in the 16th century and became really popular in the 18th century.  When travelling through Europe, Annabel Greenhalgh saw some of the wonderful portraits by Rosalba Carriera (1675 ­- 1758) in the Accademia Galleries in Venice and was absolutely captivated.

Rosalba Carriera brought pastels into the limelight achieving European popularity with her beautiful portraits. Other artists followed, the most famous being Degas, Delacroix, Millet, Monet, Renoir, Toulouse Lautrec and Whistler.
